Our History at The Imperial Hotel

For over two centuries, The Imperial Hotel has stood as a cornerstone of Cork City — a witness to history and a host to some of the world’s most iconic figures. First opened in 1813, it was designed by famed architect Sir Thomas Deane and quickly became Ireland’s premier address for travelers seeking refinement and elegance.

Over the years, our guest list has read like a chapter in the pages of history.

Among the many remarkable individuals to have passed through its doors was Frederick Douglass, the famed American abolitionist and orator, who stayed at The Imperial during his transformative tour of Ireland in 1845. His visit to Cork marked a powerful moment in his journey, deepening his belief in the universality of human rights.

Charles Dickens also stayed here in 1858 during his celebrated tour, drawing crowds to his readings and adding to the hotel’s literary legacy. In 1922, Michael Collins, a pivotal figure in Ireland’s fight for independence, spent his final night at The Imperial before his assassination — a moment etched in Irish history. And in more glamorous times, Grace Kelly, the Oscar-winning actress who became Princess of Monaco, was a guest of the hotel, further enhancing its reputation for style and prestige.
